I was born in Turkey and educated in Germany where I received a PhD in History from the Ruhr University of Bochum (2004). I spent a year at SOAS in London (1999-2000), taught at the Yıldız Teknik Üniversitesi in Istanbul (2005-2006) and held a post-doctoral position at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem/Israel from 2006-2008. From 2008-2009 I was senior fellow at the Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations of Koç University (RCAC), Istanbul, working on the Nusayris in the late Ottoman Empire. From 2009 to 2011 I was assistant professor (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter) at the University of Erfurt, Germany where he was continuing his research on the Nusayris. As of 1 March 2012 I am visiting researcher at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
